Using Nero And Burning a VCD....

I was, uh, once again trying to burn a video of a family reunion that was in AVI format. When I selected in Nero it took like 3 hours to "Encode" the video and then froze at 100%. When I used an MPEG it was quick and didn't freeze. Is there any way to do this with a AVI file? I don't want to sit here for 3 hours watching it "Encode" the video, so if there is another way, please help out!

Thanks in advance,
Josh

An AVI file is generally not a VCD. A VCD is an MPEG-1 file and is stored in a .mpg file. In order to convert your .avi files to VCD format you have to run a VCD encoder (NOT nero).

Know where I can find a VCD encoder?

You can go to vcdhelp.com (click "convert" on the left) for information on converting to and from various video formats. It will outline how to do it. The easiest (and free-est) VCD encoder is TMPGEnc. I think you can download it from vcdhelp, if not, try doom9.org (they also have conversion tutorials)

Note that this isn't going to be a simple procedure ... it's analogous to converting a wav file into an mp3, except imagine the wav file is 2 hours long and 200 times as big. It will take a good chunk of time.

You followed the instructions on VCDHelp, using TMPGEnc? What happens when you try to load your AVI file? And what kind of AVI file is it? DivX?

Konichuwa seems to know a lot about this, so I have a question. I have my Family Reunion in 2 .avi files. When I convert them to .mpg, is there anyway to combine them so they play on my DVD player?

Koni, thanks for the link. I bought some rare kungfu vcd's when I was in Singapore and could never play it. Now it works :D

You can simply convert them all to VCD (check the links I gave Josh) and then add them to a VCD compilation in Nero. Doing this will turn them into tracks on the VCD (like chapters on a DVD) and, assuming your DVD player can play VCDs, it will play fine.

DivX codec -- umm....i can load the movies and watch them. Not sure what 'cha mean, but when i load it in that TMPEG thing it says "File cannot be open or unsupported"

<< I just loaded a DivX file in TMPG and it worked fine. >>

An AVI divx file? You clicked "load video" and it worked fine?

I don't think that should matter, but I zipped up my TMPGEnc directory and I'm uploading it here:

Click

It's still uploading, so give it about 3 minutes before you download. This is version 12a Japanese, already Patched to English. Just unzip all the files into a program directory and run TMPGEnc.exe. Give it a few minutes before you download.

DONE

It takes me about 1hr 10minutes to encode 50minutes worth of .avi to .mpg. I have a athlon 1.2 w/ 384mb pc2100 ddr memory. I use VirtualDub's frameserver and then the actual encoding is done through TMPEG.
