Using my 50" plasma as monitor...

Ok I have a Panasonic 50 px75u and i just finally got a dvi/hdmi cable to try it out. At first attempt it looks great, but was wondering..

Should i use it as its native resolution which is 1360x768 or higher? Bumping it up doesnt seem to do much resolution wise...

So if i a high def. pc game trailer will it look more HD on my plasma? I gave it a shout and its so/so I was watching the new Lara Croft: Underworld video and it looked good.

Also, I have options to extend my monitor to my tv etc, but cant I have my desktop on both monitors? So i dont have to move windows over to the other monitor just to see it?

So after I used the Nvideo control panel to adjust the sides etc, should i be doing anything else to make sure it is working to its peak capacity?

If your monitor accepts 1080p you may want to think about using it. You'll have some scaling artifacts up close but you'll find that icons and such are much more reasonably sized at that res. I've got a Pioneer PDP-4280 and I've found I usually like 1920x1080p on it more than 1360x768 (being a 42 mine is also scaling even at 1360x768 b/c the native is 1024x768).

Thanks guys.. no its 720p failed to mention that... I tried resolutions up to 1920x1080 just for kicks and don't really notice much... I was wondering if:

1. watching a HD game trailer on my tv will it or should it look more HD or is it just a label..and not reality.

2. How can i have desktop on both monitors at same time... not separate from each other but just share my desktop so to speak on both...(same image on each)

1. It will look the same, provided that you run it at native resolution (which you always should if possible).

2. Use the clone mode in your drivers.

When you run games, run it at the native resolution if you can, and bump up the AA to 4X, if not 8X if your graphics card can do it.

Also, be careful. Plasmas typically suffer from burn-in, so if you leave it sitting on the Windows desktop for too long it can ruin your screen. The same goes for games where there is a static item such as your health or score.

Just keep your video card set to the max resolution of the TV. Otherwise, your card is simply rendering extra pixels that your TV will be downsampling anyhow. You'll be getting lower framerates for nothing. As Sickbeast said, run at the native resolution and use the extra power to instead add eye candy (AA/AF/shadows, etc).

1. I am allowed to have two separate resolution settings when I switch to the plasma.. so i believe it is automatically going to 1360 x 768 that is the closest res setting I can get that matches the tv.
2. Ill check the clone mode in settings, never saw it before but might have missed it.

3. Yeah good point, I think i am running the games at a diff higher res so ill bump it back and add eye candy...

I do not think things will seem "more HD" just because you are using a larger monitor/TV unless you can also increase the resolution. The most basic thing to remember is that when you are on a 22 or so inch monitor watching something at 1360 x 768 you are getting a lot more detail packed into a smaller area than a 50 inch TV at the same resolution.

True, so if my 50" has a native of 1360x768 and is 720p not 1080p then am I getting the best resolution by using it as 1360 or should I go higher?
