Using multiplePCs with a external Harddrive

I need to use multiple Windows desktop systems located across the US. I have a 300GB firewire/USB2 harddrive for storage. I do not want to try to boot from the HD due to differing hardware. I believe roaming profiles are for networks only with a central server.
I am looking to turn on the computer I am located at, plug in my drive, and log into my account and have everyting as I left it from the previous computer I was using.
Some programs can be local to the computer but since I have the room I would like to be able to have other programs run from the external HD if possible.
Has anyone done this? What is available?
I am sure this will be a 3rd party vendor software I would have to buy install on all the machines which is OK.

Already have to carry around 2 for work, Dont need mare stuff. Also I will have more power for video editing on a desktop.

Sounds like you could use VMWare player on the external hdd, and have a fully operational windows xp/2000 OS on the drive
