Using mouse software and gaming?

I used to have a Logitech Mouseman+ and used the Logitech software to set buttons 3 and 4. Button 4 I had set to Close Application. In games, it would be disabled and I could program the button in the game to something else. But at one point, maybe with newer Logitech software (or maybe newer games), I lost that ability (maybe only in certain games?), and couldn't program buttons 3, 4 inside the game. And hitting #4 would close the game. And if I shut down the mouse software first, it was like I had no buttons 3, 4 at all. Is this a common occurance? This was with Win98SE.
I've got an Intellimouse Explorer now (and WinXP), and haven't installed the software yet to check.

Heres the deal
Logitech cant make drivers for gamers if their life depended on it.
Microsoft owns if you want to bind any mouse button in game cause they allow you to bind any mouse button to regular keyboard buttons in windows.

One day Logitech will wise up and use microsoft type drivers. Then their mouse will be a viable option for me.
