This is probably a stupid question, but would using a magnetized screwdriver to put together the pc (mobo installation etc) be dangerous the electronic equipment if everything is off. In the past, I am always dropping screws when installing the motherboard etc and thats why i am wondering if it is better or worse to use a magnetized screwdriver to hold on to the screws

I use magetic screwdrivers - it is a trade off between dropping screws under/onto the mobo, and ........... i dunno what really.

HDD's are ok with this gauss magnet. You need a bloody strong magnet to ruin a hard drive.
If you are careful (as with a normal screwdriver) you will find a magnetic screwdriver a distinct advantage.

They are very handy... I just don't like poking around a mobo with needle pliers in order to get a stupid screw back... Use it, you won't regret it...

Screws have a nasty tendency of falling into the worst possible places but fortunately magnetic screwdrivers are perfect for getting them back.

The only things you'll encounter with a computer that are highly susceptable to the weak power of a magnetic screwdriver are floppy diskettes, shadow mask CRTs, and data tapes. Computer hardware generally is resilient to magnetic fields.

A high-enough Gauss magnet could damage a lot of things but your screw driver isn't of that caliber (I'm 99.99% sure).

But my brother, just using a regular magnet (nothing super-strong or anything, something you'd find at Walmart) was a little brat when he was little and damaged the CRT TVs with it (got them degaussed though).

Used one many times wihtout issue. In fact, I'd now hate to try and do a build wihtout one because they are so damn handy.

I magnetize my own cheap screwdrivers using old HD magnets.

Use them all the time for upgrades of all sorts, never any problems.

1)Take magnet
2)Move screwdriver over magnet
3)Profit
