Using laptop display with desktop?

I'm a college student and thus I'm obviously low on desk space. I currently have a desktop machine w/ a 17" CRT monitor. I'm planning to buy a laptop soon but I also want to keep my desktop in my dorm.

So here is the question - Is there some way to connect my desktop to the laptop in a way that would allow me to use the laptop's display as my desktop's display?

 
No with out getting a TV OUT card (desk top)and A TV in CARD (laptop) but other than that the answer is no.

You can pick up a cheap HP LCD 14" for around $100-200 and that would work.
