Using laptop at home (cable modem) and work (domain)-W2K-How?

I have a client (not very computer savvy) who use's his Dell laptop (running Windows 2000 Professional) at work, which is in a domain, ethernet, using static IP's...got him set-up...all OK.

The problem is when he goes home with the laptop, he cannot just "hook-up", and get on the internet with his cable modem, due to obvious reasons.

How can he use his cable modem at home and work seamlessly...emphasis on "easy", as he thinks you should be able to plug in at home or work with NO issues.

I've tried NetSwitcher, but no good. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I don't understand why NetSwitcher wouldn't work. I use it for precisely this purpose. It should work perfectly. Do you think maybe this guy has another problem? Who saved his home network setup in NetSwitcher for him? Maybe it wasn't set up right at that end?

I have a win2k laptop and I use netswitcher to easily go between work (ehternet/dhcp) to home (cablemodem, static IP), to the wifes office (DSL, DHCP) and a Nortel VPN client from the Cablemodem to work...I do usually reboot though after selecting the correct profile in Netswitcher...

I'd work on that some more, its as easy as its gonna get...

Sure beats manual reconfigurations or paying Symantec beaucoups bucks for Mobile Essentials. It's shareware, at $9 a pop -- if I remember correctly. I've had it for quite a while, but I think that's what I paid.

Thanks for all the reply's...and sorry for the late response...I must have set this Netswitcher deal up wrong (I guess)...it just will not work properly with his machine...I will re-do and let you folks know...Geez, I'm an MCSE and kinda' know what I'm doin', and can follow directions...musta' missed something 😱.

That's probably the problem, SlickVic. You're too well-qualified. You're probably making it too hard. I did that a couple of times when I first started using NetSwitcher. What works best for me is to just ignore NetSwitcher in the beginning. I go through the entire network setup just as though NetSwitcher didn't exist, and the network configuration I'm currently setting up is going to be the ONLY one on the machine. Then I invoke NetSwitcher and save the "location". Then I start over at square one for the next location.

If you're trying to set up the location parameters for your friend's home network by entering the data directly in NetSwitcher, how is it that you're getting that data? If your friend is supplying the data, is it possible that, because of his lack of experience, he's overlooking or misinterpreting something? As I said, it's better to just get a function network configuration up and running, and then to tell NetSwitcher to save it.

Or maybe that's just the way I have to do it. 😀
