using headphones with TV but...

pontifex

Lifer
I don't have a headphone jack on the TV. Here are the outputs I do have:

Outputs
Analog Audio out (RCA): 1
5.1 SPDIF Digital Optical Audio: 1
Headphone (Stereo Mini-Jack): 0

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD555s. I'll need to get an extension cable for where I sit from the TV, but I'm wondering how I should do it?

Do i go rca to 3.5mm? RCA to 1/4"? SPDIF to 3.5mm? SPDIF to 1/4"?

Do I need anything else?

Can't you just get a RCA to 3.5mm adapter?

Something like this?

That's what I did in college in order to watch TV while roomie was asleep - audio quality was meh but since it was analog cable, I had no complaints.

The quality wasn't necessarily due to it being an analog cable. The problem most likely was that the RCA connection didn't provide the headphones with much power at all.

Pontifex, for your application, it might be a better use of money to buy a used/recertified entry level receiver that has a headphone out if you find that the volume out of the RCA connection just isn't good enough. Headphone amplifiers I have seen are typically around 200$ at the entry level unless you make your own amplifier.

Very entry level receivers go for about 120$ on amazon. I have no experience with them.

The Little dot I+ goes for around $100 I believe and that'll be the entry price for a dedicated headphone desktop amp.

No. Headphone amps are fine for your application, I think.

And you can always build your own. 😛 http://tangentsoft.net/audio/cmoy-tutorial/

RCA-3.5mm adapter has worked well for me for a few years. The three devices i have used this with provide plenty of power to my large sony studio headphones. I don?t recall the model, but I bought them around 1990.

The only drawback of course is you are at a fixed volume.

I wonder how well a cmoy works. I've never heard one.

I use one for my PC and 360 and it sounds awesome, but that's with 32ohm headphones. With <200ohm phones it may struggle a bit. It gets a little over 20 hours with a 9v battery.

I ordered a CMOY from Ebay, see one of my posts above for link. I didn't order the one in the link, but the one of the slightly cheaper versions that seller has for sale. Paired it with a RCA to 3.5mm cable from monoprice and my Sennheiser HD555s and it sounds great.

After a few months now, with very little use, my CMOY is a piece of shit. I have to leave the cable from the TV to the CMOY about halfway unplugged from the CMOY to get it to work. I get no sound, only sound in 1 ear, or just noise when it's plugged in all the way. Guess I need to get a receiver or something else.
