Using H110 with 120mm fans?

Hey guys,

I'm transitioning to a themed build and am wondering if there's a possibility I can use 120mm fans with an adapter on my H110. All of my other fans are going be Corsair air series fans, but they don't have an SP140 fan available as of yet.

Is it possible to use two adapters and use 2x SP120? I've read somewhere that it takes some modding ability as the spacing isn't the same. Can anyone explain exactly what that means? Does anyone know if this is possible?

The H110 uses 2 x's 140mm fans not 120's.

The difference from other 280 x 30 x 140 AIO systems, such as the NZXT Kraken X60, the Corsair Rad uses a 20mm rather then a 15mm spacing between the Fans. This is an easy Case Modification when mounting the H110 Rad with the 20mm fan spacing into Cases supporting the 280mm Rad with the 15mm Fan spacing.

By the way, I run the H110 in the Top of a slightly modified Fractal Midi ARC R2 with tons of room for Push/Pull between the Rad and MB to cool an I7 2700k that runs 1600/4700Ghz 24/7 with Temp between 34 Idle and 64C under full load (Prime95) using the 2 Stk Corsair 140 fans in Push - It's a Great AIO solution in my opinion and very quiet.

Other then a the Fan Spacing and Kraken USB Controller there's not much difference from the Corsair H110. I did not care the USB Fan Controller and prefer the BIOS PMW Fan Controller, Warranty for the Corsair is better, plus it's $20 cheaper. They both use the same Antec Pump.

You can use Koolance adapter or a cheaper version. Personally I'd go with the Koolance because it looks like its made to be indestructible. You can DIY an adapter but you would need tools and a template.

Spacing shouldn't be a problem with the fans if the adapter itself fits within the standard square dimension of a fan. The spacing can be an issue if you're mounting the radiator to the case. 240mm radiators have a 15mm spacing between the two screw holes in the middle while 280mm radiators needs a 20mm spacing. Not all cases come with 280mm radiator support. You should double check your case's compatibility with 20mm spacing, some manufacturers have charts which shows just that.

I really like the koolance adapter since it's steel vs. the Bgears plastic. But since it's flat theres a large chance of not being able to screw in the 120mm fan as the fins might block the slot, correct?

What fins? Are you referring to radiator fins? The Koolance adapter sits atop the original 140mm mounts and its a good chunk of steel there to give more than enough clearance to prevent the screws from puncturing the radiator.

If you mount the H110 on the top of your case (assuming it has a 280mm grille there), you could zip tie the 120mm fans on the outside of the case. Not the most optimal solution, but I'm cheap and don't want to pay $13 + s/h for two adapters I'll probably only use once.

Another question: I understand that in general, higher static pressure fans are better than air flow when used on a radiator.

However, if I were to run air flow fans in pull configuration, would that work? I am assuming that using static pressure is good for push, but would air flow work alright for pull?

In terms of performance, Push+Pull > Push > Pull. Placing it in pull would probably make cleaning a little bit easier but it compromises performance.
