Using goof off to remove thermal pad

I just ordered some AS III and was wondering how much of a pain removing the old thermal pad will be.

I was thinking of starting off with goof off on a Q-tip and then using rubbing alcahol on a Q-tip. This seems to be the most suggested way to get the heat sink and CPU clean enough for AS IIIto be put on.

I read the term "lapping" ....what does that mean

The directions say to spread it on as thick as a piece of paper but I've read in a thread to put it on as thin as possible.

This is why I just usually use the thermal pad but I'm getting "gutsy" and wanted to try some AS III.....
I'm wondering if my CPU running at 52 or 53c at idle is too high.....another reason for AS III

CPU AMD 2100 with basic hsf

How many applications in the 6.0 g AS III tube.....

Thanks

alcohol don't work very well on taking those pads off
Yur best bet is scrapping it off the heatsink with a razer blade

lapping is sanding the heatsink very smooth so the surface makes a better connection to the die

yes the thinner the better
as good as the thermal conducting abilties of ASIII they are far worse than copper or aluminum
so even tho having it in micropits is good when it gets thick it kinda insulates

you'll get many applications with a tube (maybe 30 or more, I still havn't used a tube of AS2 I bought last year)

I'll let the others fill in and ellaborate

if you have any questions let um fly

OK..
Scrape the heatsink with razor...what about the CPU...
Should I worry about Lapping...whats the correct way to do it....
apply the AS III as thinly as possible....
it works best when spread thin....
one tube goes a long long way....

it will be hard to get the pink stuff off the actual cpu die
use a cloth rag and some alcohol and don't be afraid to push a little just don't chip the corners

yur main concern should be getting it off the top of the core cause that's were you don't want it
if there is still a bit stuck on the sides of the core or on the cpu package I wouldn't worry

yeah lap the heatsink with the finest silicon wet sand paper you can get
put the sand paper on a peice of glass (like from a picture frame) and do it in yur sink

OK....guess its better just to remove the thermal pad and use AS III when you first buy it instead of trying to get it out of the heatsink and cpu after its melted....

Use an old credit card or piece of soft yet rigid plastic to remove the thermal pad from the HSF and the CPU core

Use alcohol to remove any remaining pad on both surfaces (via q-tip or an extremely small spot on a piece of cloth)

Use goof off to remove anything else that remains

I thought alcohol should be used after the Goof Off. Goof Off being the heavy stripper and the alcohol cleaning up behind it.

I've always found that Goof Off even removed what alcohol would leave behind. For me, Goof Off would do more smearing on the paste because of the quantity of it. Alcohol would get up the majority of everything, and Goof Off would remove EVERYTHING that was left behind. But hey! You can use alcohol after that too if you want :D

You don't want to use a razor or screwdriver on a HS. That will scratch the surface. Scratches are a bad thing b/c it prevents adequate contact b/t the CPU core and the HS.

Goof Off is awesome stuff. In the sink, I pour a small amount of the stuff directly on the pad and let it soak for a moment. THen I scrape off the pad w/my finger nail. Then, I soak a small spot of paper towel with the stuff and remove whatever remains.

After all the pink stuff is gone, I use a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol to remove whatever traces off Goof Off remain. The HS should be streak-free and have a shiny appearance. HTH.

Goof Off is strong stuff and will remove anything. Use it in a well ventilated place! Use alcohol afterwards for final clean up.

Hmm, seeing as this is the consensus, I'll start doing my alcohol dip, goof swab, and alcohol swab. Not a bad routine.

I thought the exact same thing when I first played it. Jeff, maybe you and I just have the same taste in porn. ;) Had to quickly turn the volume down so the people around me didn't get the wrong idea.

Hard core techno-geek porn. Awww yeah, baby. Look at that cpu core.

edit: didn't mean to highjack the thread. Everybody move along. Nothing more to see here.

Great video! & Thanks for the laughs!
Now that made it simple....too bad vids like that weren't on the manufacturers sites then maybe some decent music would be filling the background!
Looked like his heatsink and cpu were pretty clean before he started though.
I'll leave the jack hammer in the shed and just use some good old fashioned elbow grease!
