Using FPS engine to recreate popular locations/places/things?

I recall a while back when Unreal first came out how a group of people were using the engine to model Notre Dame in a "real-life cyber-walkthru" or whatever.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any other, more recent projects with more powerful engines of similar scope and idea...

My friends tried to make our old high school into a CS map. I think it ended up being abandoned because it was too much work.

There's an UT2004 Ons map based on a Persian city.

this would be cool, if such a software to do this existed.
I always wanted to make a sim city of my town, but its just too involved and long of a process..
