Using firewire to transfer miniDV video from camcorder...

How long should it take to transfer an hour of video (rather, at what speed should it be transferring), assuming that an hour of DV video is roughly 13GB if I'm not mistaken.

What I am getting is around 3.5-4MB/s and that seems rather, umm, slow... ???

If I'm not mistaken, DV over Firewire transfers in realtime... Perhaps it has something to do with how fast the tape heads read.

yes, transferring from miniDV is done in realtime. that is the speed the camera reads at, no way around it, it is the bottleneck in the system. once it is done, your transfer speeds will increase, based upon your other hardware.

what really sucks is when you have about 30 tapes to capture. that just kills a perfectly good weekend.
