using external monitor with laptop

I've got an ibm xseries laptop with docking station. I have an external lcd monitor connected in the vga port of the docking station.

When I work with the laptop closed using the external monitor and I open the laptop lid, the external monitor goes black. I have to hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and sign on the machine again for the monitor to come back. Anyone know if this has something to do with having my laptop set in standby mode?

You could try changing Standby settings but in my opinion it has nothing to do with Standby; I 've never worked on a laptop that didnt' behave in that fashion, docking station or not.
