Hi,

I recently bought dlink D2750U WIFI ADSL modem/router, for my ADSL internet connection.

But I have now changed my ISP, who provide internet via cable(not telephone line). The ISP guy provides a cable modem(old modem) along with it.

I have connected my PC this way:
Cable modem -> Router -> PC through RJ45. I am able to access internet from my PC, but I am not able to get wifi working on the router. And I am logging onto internet through a dial up connection. I did check the router model details and has WLAN.
Questions:
1) Please help in configuring the router to get wifi working.
2) Also, my default gateway seems to be either 0.0.0.0 or blank. So, I am not able to login to the modem unless I remove the modem connection. Please let me know if I am doing anything wrong here.

Here are a few more details:
Output of ipconfig: http://pastebin.com/Zr9Eb7L7

That modem/router will not work with a cable internet connection. It needs a WAN rj45 port, it's WAN port is the DSL plug.

Get a new router.

Remove the Modem Connection and configure every thing to work without the Internet, including the Wireless.

Then if you plug the Modem and it does not work it means that the Make a LAN port WAN (as describe in the manual) does not work.

Otherwise, get a decent Standalone Wireless Router, if the D-Link D2750U is good for you any N-300 sub $40 Wireless Router will work for you.

Thats bad! Since this Dlink router doesnt work, I am planning to buy another wireless router, Netgear WNR2000 N300.
1) Would this work?. It has WAN port. Reviews look good, though its an entry level modem.
2) Also if I change my ISP back again, will I be able to connect my ADSL modem to this new netgear router and use wireless connection. Will I be able to connect any modem(ADSL/cable) to this new netgear router to get the wifi working.

Please let me know. Thank you

yes, you could still use it. set it up as a WAP: http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html

and here's the support page for the Dlink ADSL device: http://www.dlink.com.my/products/?idproduct=495&idCategory=180

On to the new setup...Who's the Cable ISP? and what modem did they provide?

Thank you. Also, I have an old TP LINK WR541G router, and it does have a WAN. When i connect, the following way, i am not able to get internet connection on my PC or wireless:
Cable Modem -->TP-LINK router --> PC

I set the network type to dynamic and tried enabling and disabling DHCP . But still couldnt get the internet or wireless to work. Please advice.

Was the modem working already?

If not, call the ISP

If so, then unplug the modem power/ethernet to pc/coax. unplug power and wan ethernet from tp link, shutdown computer...

next, plug in power and coax to the modem and give it a few minutes to establish communications with the ISP.

once hte lights all look good, then you can plug in the tplinks wan and power cable, and wait for it to come up.

boot up the pc, and login to the tp link and see if you now get a WAN address. If you don't, then do the same process over, but hard reset the router before plugging in into the modem via ethernet.

Every ISP is different, but both the cable ISP's in my area (i'm on comcast, others towns have cox) will use DHCP to give out the public IP to the router.
