Using cdrom (50 pin) with ultra 160 hard drive(68 pin) will slow down the data rate?

Will the performance get hit if you attached a scsci cd writer (50 pin plexwriter 12/10/32) to a current ultra 160 hard drive( IBM ultrastar) hooked up on Adaptec 2940 uw. Thanks

My understanding is that all things SCSI will run at the speed of the slowest item in the link. So yes, it would slow it down.

Yes, I assume your 50 pin is an Ultra SCSI connector, which would limit your HD to under 20MB/s which would severely hamper its performance.

actually, the newer SCSI controller will be able to reach indenpendent device's maximum speed.. but your 2940UW didn't support it, in fact, your 2940UW is not even u160 capable anyway, you are running at UW speed, which is 40MB/s max for the SCSI bus on the wide connection.

Edit:

forgot to add that you can safely use your 12x10x32 Plexotr in the current setup, since Plextor is Ultra SCSI interface (20MB/s on narrow bus), which is the same speed of your u160 drive in the current setup(40MB/s on wide bus).
