Using Athlon XP 1700 with Soyo Kt600 dragon plus

So I just bought the Soyo KT600 Motherboard kit from tigerdirect and after putting in everything, I booted it and tried to install windows. But, while the installation for windows was going on, the computer suddenly shut off and started beeping. I'm pretty sure this is because of the built in processor over heat check that turns off if the processor overheats.

There are two things, first, the thermal paste on top of my processor has worn off a little bit, so the heat sink is pretty much touching the processor directly. Could this have heated it up too much?

second, I went to the Soyo website to see if I could find what was wrong, and turns out they say the minimum processor to use with this motherboard is the Athlon XP 1800. Should it really matter if I was using the Athlon xp 1700? Would buying a new processor fix this?

I don't know what else could be wrong other than that. What do you guys think? I appreciate your help.

I have the KT600 Dragon Ultra version, and it has dip switches that you need to flip to set the cpu multiplier... The manual says it'll go down to 5.0x, which I think well covers a 1700+

When you say 'started beeping', can you be more specific? Solid beep, multiple beeps?

When I say started beeping, I mean there was a solid soft beep, which was stopped when I unplugged the computer. The manual instructed to do this I think. I'll look for the dip switches to set it to 5.0x. I'll let you know how it goes, thanks!

If there is a solid soft beep, that (99.9%) means that either the CPU is overheating or the fan does not support RPM reporting.

Try remounting the CPU heatsink - I have two KT400 Dragon Ultra motherboards that when you installed the stock AMD heatsink, it didnt make contact with the core. Assuming you have enough heat sink compound on the proc, a downward push and a wiggle solved it, and may solve your issue.

The other problem I've had is when I upgraded my heatsink, but the fan did not send RPM info, and the Fan-Off Control (FOC in their jargon) set off the warning. According to the KT600 Ultra and KT400 Ultra manuals, holding 'insert' while booting will let you override the FOC so you can disable it via BIOS.

As for unlocking the CPU and/or changing the multipliers by hand, I don't believe you have to change this away from the default (for that chip, I'm not sure what it should be and I don't have a chart handy). If the above doesn't solve the problem, the chip multiplier might hold the key.

(if you know the FSB rating and the stock mhz for the CPU, divide the FSB in two. [FSB266 = 133, FSB333 = 166, etc] That number times the multiplier gives you the stock mhz. This may help)
