Using an old computer for a wireless router

episodic

I've got to move where I'm going to probably go back to dialup. I want to keep wireless freedom with my laptop at the very least.

Wireless routers generally don't support modems at all or only as an after thought.

Could I just use an old pc, place a pci wireless nic in it in ad hoc mode, and share the dial up to that nic?

I've got two laptops that I'd like served, sometimes at the same time - will this work with the ad hoc connection sharing?

You can do it for sure between you Internet capable computer and one more computer.

There might be few Wireless Cards the can do ad- hoc with more then one computers.

If you are Using ?Penquin Box? you can actually turn the card into Access Point.

There is a vendor that sells some thing like this for windows but it id too expensive, it will be less expensive to buy a Wireless Cable/DSL Router that has a serial port, add to it an External Dialup modem and share the Normal Way both Wire and Wireless.

P.S. Some Wireless hardware might have difficulties sharing with ICS.

Under such a situation this usually works: AnalogX Proxy.

As Jack stated, the cards will have to be in ad-hoc mode if you want to communicate between them. Windows ICS(internet connection sharing) should be able to route it to the dialup connection easily.

*nix is nice too.....try astaro security linux with that. It is a commerical ( free for personal use) Linux Firewall and routing OS which will give you a fairly simple and even advanced AP setup depending on your needs. It requires you to read a manual, but after some simple instructions, the entire setup is done via a nice web-interface.
