Using an iPod as a HD.

Hi.
My college allows the use of USB drives to transfer data to and from home/s. I cant be arsed dishing out £50 for a USB drive, and so was thinking. If i was to buy the USB cable for my iPod, would windows recognise it as a HD? And would i be able to use it to transfer stuff around?
I know i can use it as a HD on my home PC, but thats cos i have driver and firewire port., but i just wondered if it could be done with a USB cable and no driver.

Thanks in advance.

How much data are you transferring? If it's a small amount just go get a 64MB USB 1.1 flash drive. They can be had for about $30 over here. That's about £20 I think.

Your missing the point.
I have a form of removebale media(the iPod), and i want to use it a drive on the college machines. I would spend that £20 on a USB drive, but that £20 could buy me 10 pints of Guiness.....

I'm not missing the point, just trying to propose alternatives that may be easier than trying to use your iPod in a way that it is really not designed to be used.

I suppose i should give you credit for coming up with alternatives. But the iPod can be used as a HD, i just wondered if it was possible with a USB cable rarther than firewire, and with no specific drivers.

LOL.
For arguements sake, we`ll say its Worthingtons then!. lol.

You won't be getting 10 pints whatever you do - the USB cable will set you back about £15, anyway.

I have my sources for my beer......i can get it cheap....lol.

If your Ipod is firewire then you can't use it with USB. Otherwise, yes, Windows will see it as just HDD.

Seriously, that stuff you buy at the uni bar doesn't classify as beer. Plus everyone knows you are just renting it there... I'll bet they have a complete recycling system... 😉

iPods can be either. All thats needed is a new docking cable, which cost about £10-15.

Who says im at Uni?.........

I am sure you can load data in your iPod and then transfer it but I don't know how iPod's drive will react to it.
I tried my compact flash card, that I use in my digital camera, like that once. Actually I was trying something. I loaded some .jpg pictures into the card and tried to view them in it. Of course nothing happened and then I deleted the pictures off the card but then, when I tried to take pictures, I realized that the card still thinks the pictures are there so my 32MB flash card became 31 MB 🙁 . So I suggest if you really want to do that, load a file no larger than 1MB and then delete it to see if iPod really deallocates that space after deletion.

And 2 thumbs up for guiness 😉

if you've set the ipod to be used as removable storage, it should work. but you need the usb cable. and i don't know if you'd need to load the apple software or not.... but it's doable.

FYI ppl. The iPods CAN be used as a HD. Im just asking if drivers are needed if a USB cable is used on it.
