Using an HDD equipped netbook near magnets...

OK, I figured that I'd need a small SSD-equipped netbook because my primary transportation is a motorcycle and the tank bag is magnetic. So, I placed an order for an Acer Aspire One 150 when I found it for $100 cheaper than the Dell mini 9 with twice the SSD capacity and other options that would increase the cost of the Dell (webcam). Turns out that it is an ABYSMAL performer in XP due to the SSD's poor write speeds, so I'm taking a second look at HDDs.

People are always talking about how HDDs can withstand far more than magnetic screwdrivers and such can subject, but how far can I push it?

The magnets secure the bag to the tank very securely, so I assume that the magnetic field is quite strong. For example, I couldn't believe that I fit a gallon of milk, a two liter bottle, two one-liter bottles, and some chips in the tiny bag once but the magnets held tightly and it made it home just fine. If I am right and the magnets are a concern, I don't think a backpack is the solution because it will obviously be near the tank bag often and will frequently come in contact. I even worry about having an external one in my jacket because I am sure to forgetfully carry the tank bag against my side.

No worries. It takes a very strong field to erase/corrupt data. Keep in mind that the drive itself has a very strong magnet already in it. THe only type of magnetic field that can reliably hose a HD is an electrically created one such as by a bulk eraser/degauser.
