I've googled this several times and there really has been no solid answer. Some say yes, some say no and some say maybe.

My mobo is pretty obsolete, SiS 730S, and apparently it only has a 4x agp slot.

Is it possible to run an 8x agp card in a 4x slot? Aren't they backwards compatible? Or something?

Yes, it is very much possible. Even the highest end cards out there today can do 4X

Mark me down as "maybe" The rule of thumb has exceptions. I could not make my 5800U work with a P4PE, and just a couple weeks ago a member posted issues getting a new x800 series to work correctly with that board. It was indeed the board in his case just as it was in mine, and a new board solved his problems. I don't know if it's a signaling issue, AGP slot power issue with some boards or what, but not all 8X cards will work in all 4x boards.
