Using all memory slots on 4400+

Hey all.

I just jumped into the AMD 64 x2 camp - re learning how to swim in a new ocean.

I just built a new system, and planned to put 4GB of ram in the thing (since all mobo specs say that I can), and my rig will be used part time for graphic design. My previous rig would run out of physical memory performing certain actions in Photoshop, although I had 2GB installed.

Anyway, my new system does *funny* things with all 4 memory slots populated. In doing trial and error, I found that using only two memory slots fixed the problem, but since I haven't seen any 2GB sticks, this limits me to a total of 2GB in my system (2x1GB). I have since read some vague references to problems with AMD and populating all 4 memory slots with double sided dimms, but nothing crystal clear, and certainly nothing to suggest how I'm supposed to be able to use 4GB per the mobo and processor specs, and yet I can't get it to work.

Like I said, after buying my new setup and having problems, I began to find little threads here and there mentioning problems with using all the memory slots, but nothing that really helped me to know if there's anything I can do.

Here's my system:

AMD 64 x2 4400+ (what's up with the plus sign thing?!?!?)
Gigabyte k8n ultra - 9, bios f5
4 x 1 GB Corsair Value Ram DDR 3200
Windows XP Pro, both 32 and 64 bit versions, dual boot
egeforce 7800 GTX
(did I forget anything important?)

I haven't overclocked anything yet, have pretty much left everything at all stock settings. If anyone is thinking that the problem is primarily the value ram, FYI I tried putting 4 sticks (4x512) of Corsair Twinx 3200LL modules, and had the same problems. The same 4 ram modules worked great on my Intel board.

The main problems I get are video related. E.g., when I start up or restart my system, the OS seems to have forgotten the video driver, and the screen resolution is dropped to default lowest settings (looks like crap on my 1600x1200 lcd monitor). Also, running 3dmark benches return an "out of video memory" error. So at first I thought my problem was a bad video card, but since I removed half the memory sticks, no problems for weeks now.

Any suggestions as to how to actually use the 4 GB I'm supposed to have access to?

Thanks!

Thag

I don't know about 4 gigs, but I built one using 4 x 512 OCZ Value Winbond and it ran perfectly. 4400+, QuadroFx 1400, EP-9NPA+ Ultra

If you're going to use all 4 slots, invest your time in finding 1GB sticks that are single sided. Rev E fixed the downclocking issue with 4 sticks installed, but it didn't fix the drop to 1T with doublesided sticks. Single Sided sticks x 4 = 1T, Double Sided = 2T.
