using a wireless router as an ethernet connection?

I just spent about 3 hours fruitlessly trying to get this to work. I have two identical routers with tomato firmware on them, version 1.21.

One of them gets the connection from my modem and wired connections work fine on my computers, this is my primary router.

But on the second floor of the house there is a pc that needs to use the second router to pick up a signal wirelessly to provide the internet connection, it is connected to the routers wired port (not the 'Internet' port) by the ethernet port on my motherboard. I googled up several solutions but I am either reading the wrong articles or I am not doing it right.

Can anyone here maybe walk me through how to get this to work? Thanks very much.

First, I'd change the IP to be something compatible but not conflicting with the main router. E.g. 192.168.1.2

Then I'd try something like the steps from Tomato's video:

It's a lot heavier on graphics than detail and explanation, but it is one place to start.

For an internal network, "Wireless Ethernet Bridge" mode might be better than "Wireless Client".

A re-boot of the client computer might be needed in the end.

Tomato has a client bridge mode. You could also use WDS as it very easy to set up. Just make sure they have different IP's. once you have wifi set up on the main router, set the remote router as a client bridge or WDS with the same WIFI security settings as the main one. Also, disable the DHCP server on the remote router and you should be good to go.

Well, here's the deal. I live in a 200 year old house. The transmitting 'primary' router is on the first floor directly below my secondary receiving router which is next to my pc on the top floor. After I got it to work the signal was pretty lousy. In the tomato firmware I just got red and yellow bars in the signal strength display. The routers are close enough I think for a good signal but they might as well be blocks away in my house/room. I have cordless phones and wires galore in my room so I think that is adding some noise and robbing me of some signal strength.

Should I upgrade the antennas on the routers or get something like a Cantenna and plug it into my pc? I kind of feel like I blew my money on a second router that is giving me some bad performance. I play online games so its a big deal to me. Also, I tried switching the channels on both routers and the signal strength is still poor. Thanks for any ideas.

If nothing else is going to be using the wireless then pick up some directional antennas and point the two routers at each other.

Try re-orienting your antennae so that they're both parallel to the ceiling.

Try temporarily powering off your cordless phones, etc., for interference testing.
