Using a wireless router as a network adapter

I am upgrading to a new motherboard and unfortunately it only has 2 PCI slots. My primary sound card as 2 PCI cards(the E-mu 1212m) one of which is just a "hold it steady" type connection and doesn't actually use the PCI bus. However, these won't work in a PCIe x1 connector and I don't feel like using my second PCIexpress 2.0 slot to hold it.

So, I could buy a second WRT54GL and, with my preferred tomato firmware, configure it to operate as a wireless adapter...connect it to my GbE port on the mobo and use that as the wireless card. Is this correct? I imagine this would also get me better connectivity than a small wireless adapter but I could be wrong...anyone want to confirm?
 
Any Router, or Access Point that can be configured a a Clint can be used as a Wireless Card

Many can not do it ar all.

Some can do it as is, and some can do it with 3rd party firmware.
one in the Router.

WRT54GL with DD-WRT, or Tomato can serve this purpose.

When working this way the computer does not know that its Network connection is Wireleess.

All the Wireless configuration has to be done in the Router.
 
Ok if anyone can give me some tips or hints about this I would appreciate it. I tried today to get it to work with the router connected to the client computer configured as a bridge and nothing special happens. I'm still connected to that router but I don't know how to get the routers to connect to one another. I must be missing something here...
 
You know a cheap netgear or edimax USB dongle wifi module works wonders, plus you get the benefit of being able to get up to a 15ft extension cable and hang it from the ceiling for ultra reception 😛.

I considered that, but I find more use for routers. They pack a whole lot of functionality into a cost package that's quite similar to a wireless adapter. I really don't see much point in getting a wireless adapter for a PC unless you don't have the space for a router now actually. The system works quite well!
