Using a tv as a monitor...

I have a shuttle with a 9800 pro.. i want to bring it to a buddies house tonight so we can do some recording...but i don't want to lug my monitor... Is it possible to set it up so that i can just plug in the svideo with an rca adpater and run it to his pc...thoughts...

? You wanna plug your computer into the other or run it off a tv? Yes you can plug it to a tv and use the tv as a monitor.

i guess that whole blob wasn't to clear...

I know that i can use a tv as a monitor... But i have always had my lcd to boot up the system...and then i turn on the tv feature from within windows...

I will not have a monitor to switch the settings in windows...so what i want to be able to do is just plug int he tv to my 9800 and use that as my primary/only display....

I have tried this before but with little knowledge, and it has never worked...do i need to set something up within windows...or is it even possilbe...thank you

I use a 9800 with my HTPC on a big screen TV. The picture rolls until the PC loads Windows XP and fires up the video driver and then it's fine. I think the ATI video cards must default to composite video instead of svideo. As long as you don't need to edit your BIOS you should be fine.

The video driver will auto sense your svideo connection

last time i set it up in my living room...i plugged it all in...and no display ever came to my tv screen...that is why i am currious if i have to enable anything...with my buddies nvidia card...he turns the tv function on...then next time he boots it looks for the tv as a primary monitor...then he switches it back when ready for his lcd...

i don't quite follow...what do mean svideo input...i mean i switch the svideo to an rca connection...and then turn the channel to the line in...is there something more i should do...

No, that should work fine. Your vid drivers will auto-sense the s-vid connection, as someone already mentioned. As long as the s-vid cable is plugged in to your pc before you boot up, everything should work fine. I have my "movie box" pc hooked up to my TV, and I don't think I've ever had a monitor plugged into that.

Just remember if you probably won't be able to read text very well. At least that is the way it has been on all my Nvidia cards, maybe the ATI's do it better.

Make sure you set your desktop to a supported resolution first (800x600@60Hz for example) before you shut it down to just connect the TV. You can test it yourself before you take it there. You can also hot swap to his monitor to adjust the settings as well in a pinch.
