Using a TV as a display

I can't seem to find an answer, which usually means no in most cases, but:

If a TV has 720p and 1080i capabilities, can it display a 1920x1080 resolution from a PC? I'm guessing no, but I want to be reassured in my assessment. I just don't know if the TV can take the 1080p resolution from the PC and interlace it to 1080i. Any help would be appreciated. Resources would be good, too.

You answered your own question. You need the 1920x1080 from your desktop LCD, whatever brand you use.
You can watch TV on your LCD by getting a video card that has function.
If your're using your TV for your video output, you're better off by using another LCD.
I use my main 22" and my 18" for playback video.

You interpreted my question wrong.

PC output 1920x1080.

TV has resolutions of 720p or 1080i.

Can the PC output be displayed on the TV at the 1920x1080 resolution.

it would be downsampled, and it depends on the tv itself if it does downsampling

Computers are progressive display, you'll need to run 720p or it will be downsampled (and degraded) to 720p on display.

I am almost certain that only 1080p TVs can display 1920x1080 via a pc. Why not just try it and see what it does?

It depends on the TV.
Some may be able to convert the 1080p signal to 1080i and display or it might downsample and display as 720p.
either way it can't really hurt it so try it out as stogez said

Thanks for the responses. I'm actually looking at buying a TV to use as a PC display. The westinghouse 37" lcd does 1080p, but I'm afraid it may be too big. Can't seem to find a 27-32" LCD that will do 1080p, only 720p/1080i.

My 1080i lcd is native at 1360x768 and doesn't do very well with 1920x1080, although catalyst control lists 1920x1080 as the max res it suppports.
