Using a SATA HDD on an old system

So I want to add a SATA drive for some extra DVR storage, but my mobo only has PATA. It is pretty old, doesn't even have PCIe.

Looking for the cheapest method that doesn't severely compromise speed. I'll probably upgrade the system and keep this HDD in the next year.

I used a $10 SATA adapter (it was not a RAID card) I got off ebay for 2-3 month until I got my Areca card while I was transitioning from IDE RAID to SATA RAID. They work great for just adding SATA ports.

Yup. Just buy a SATA controller card. If you want removable drives, you can get a SATA conroller with both internal and external ports, and hot-swap compliant. then you can use external SATA housings if you want.
