Using a router without internet connection

We won't have broadband for a few more months, but in the meantime I would like to have a home network. I'll probably go wireless. Is there any way to buy either a wireless router or a wired router and use it as a switch until we get the cable connection?
 
Actually no if you buy a router, but most of the stuff they sell you in stores (and probably what you have) are actually router / switch combos so if you have one of those then yes.
