Using a router on a LAN for Internet

I was wondering if a router would work OK on my school LAN connection (10 Base T). I am looking at getting the Netgear RT314 to use in my dorm. I am looking to get it for 2 reasons.
1: Firewall Protection
2: Share a the connection with another PC

Also will I still be able to map network drives with it. I will be running Win2k on my main computer. I know that I can use ICS, but I would like to have a switch too. Also, I can use it for Cable or DSL next year when I move off campus.

One more thing will VNC still work with it or will I have to open a port on the router.

Thanks
