I've seen JackMDS post a link to this helpful webpage, and today I finally got around to doing it.
Right now my housing is using a POS Linksys BEFW11S4v4 (may be part of the problems with our internet dropping connections, cabled or not) that has enough available DHCP addresses to give out. It's IP address is 192.168.2.1 in our home network.
So, someone correct me if I'm wrong but here's what I did.
1.) Connected the cable modem to the Netgear MR814v2 internet port that I want to use as a switch/WAP and only my computer to port 1. For some reason, I couldn't just directly hook my computer to the router and type 192.168.0.1 (it was default, I even hard reset it). It just didn't find anything. So I ended up having to switch to DHCP, and just have my comp plugged into the Netgear that was plugged into the cable modem (I left the rest of the network unplugged for the moment).
2.) Once in the Netgear router config now, I changed it's IP address to be in the range of my primary Linksys router, so I set the Netgear to 192.168.2.2. I turned off DHCP as well as any type of restricted access. Now, do I still need to broadcast the SSID on the Netgear for it to act as only a WAP? Also, do I need to allow the same MAC addresses as my primary router (I will turn on filtering once setup)?
3.) From my understanding on that webpage, the network should still essentially be only that of the Linksys. My roommates should all be under the same network IP range (for those that use DHCP) and we should all continue to be able to be on the same Windows File Sharing network. And those of us that use static can continue to do so, as well as our port forwards, etc.
4.) In addition, I thought that once on, I should be able to type 192.168.2.1 to access my primary (this worked) and 192.168.2.2 to access my Netgear still (this didn't).
So it seems that it almost worked. At one point I was connected via DHCP to my primary router while actually being connected to the Netgear. But the WAP aspect of the Netgear didn't seem working (although I don't personally have wireless) and I can't access the router config on the Netgear with 192.168.2.2 (it's newly assigned IP address). I can't seem to access the Netgear at all unless I connect only it to the cable modem and only me to the Netgear.
I used a standard cat5 from port 2 on the Linksys to port 2 on the Netgear. This is correct, right? I don't know if the Netgear requires a net connection into its internet port (as opposed to one the standard 4 ports) to access its config?
Any ideas?
For now it appears to be working.. I'll let this thread die unless I need to ressurect it. 🙂
