Hello there all!!

I am working and researching for a new system and have been focusing on the cpu,mb video card,storage....(you get the idea)

well, if i end up putting 2-3k for a nice rig, i was hoping that when i get my new desk to place it on, (also need to find some virgins to sacrifice to the shinny new rig!) to hook up a ps2, xbox to use with the crt monitor...

Now basically my system is this: (basically) FX-55, sli, ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe mb (waiting to see what the deal is with the dfi-sli(still in the dark about what this means/may mean to me a gamer) basic mem. and some lights within the case. video card... gt6800U (atm). i think thats all...

do i need to get the O/S with Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center 2005 Edition w/TV-Tuner & Phillips RC ...

is it even possible to do that...?

i hope i was able to explain myself well enough. and I do appreciate the help... !! thank you.

The best thing to do with a PS2 or XBox is to get a VGA scan converter (a 'VGA box'), which will give you a VGA signal from the S-Video or component out of the game console. Then you can display this on the monitor directly.

Most video capture cards will introduce some amount of delay into the signal, making it very hard to play video games using them.

My own solution would be to get the $50 Leadtek WinFast TV2000XP Expert, which can take inputs like those produced by console systems. Not sure if it supports component video though. Probably does.

Here are some links to useful converter boxes (both $50): Box 1, Box 2 (not sure if anyone except Play-Asia carries them).

If you can find some converter boxes by the company Redant, also known as Sagestar, they are much cheaper (usually ~$20 IME), built specifically for the consoles (even using the proprietary video connection in the back of the console in some cases), and don't require a power adapter. However this company is very elusive, I've never found their website and their items are always out of stock... o_O

Hope that helps. :)

Hehe, glad to be of help. I was lucky to have found this thread, I did a lot of research on this subject about a year ago, when my TV stopped working and I wanted to play my Gamecube on my LCD monitor. :p

As for the wish list, thanks for the compliment! I usually update it every couple of days but the price generally hovers around $1500, +/- $50. I've been tweaking it since August... :p

Oh, and hang on a sec, I'll add a link to the TV2000 in the previous post.

y eah if you go TV Tuner the guy who posted the delay issue is correct~ there is something like a 1/4th second delay. For most things that won't matter, but if you are a 2d fighting man and Street Fighter 3rd Strike is your style you'll find it nearly impossible to parry considering that 1/4th second makes a BIG difference in games like that

Or get THIS and you can bypass the computer if you want. I use this and have a small AV switch box with svideo ins and outs. I dont even have to turn the PC on if I want. No lag at all and looks fantastic. Better visual quality than any video card because the signal goes directly to the monitor and not thru the PC. They have cheaper models also, like the N4 which is like 99 bucks or so.

 I need to look into getting one of those. That would be great at college.

Note 1: Using a lousy (read: cheap) Game console VGA box will give you lousy picture
Note 2: Using TV card or VIVO card will introduce some delay (may or may not effect your game)

Both the "boxes" and the Redant/Sagestar equipment I suggested would bypass the computer entirely as well. Your link does pretty much what the "boxes" I linked to do, except for three times the price. Then again Viewsonic is a well-known brand...

This is true. I revise my recommendation to only include the "boxes" I linked (Box 1, Box 2).

I chose the N5 also for the tuner functionality as well. If there is no need for TV tuner then those 2 boxes seem pretty decent. One of the things I like about my N5 is the fact that I can change monitor refreshes when I play console games. Cuts down the headache factor. :)
