Using a PS2 as a DVD, is there any way to make a DVD not wide-screen?

I heard about some kind of a zooming feature that gets rid of the black spaces at the top and bottom of the screen...? I have a regular 4:3 TV and with wide-screen movies about 30 to 40% of my screen is cut off. 🙁 I can reduce the black space by about half if I switch my TV to 16:9 format but that stretches everything out horribly.

Is there any other solution?

Why does everyone hate widescreen? it's the only fricken way to watch a movie damnit. That's how it was originally filmed in. That's what the director wanted you to see!

Well, there's really no way to do it. You COULD rip it to VCD, reburn it, and then the black bars would be gone...but that's a lot of work. 😉

Can you buy DVDs in non wide-screen format? Don't some of them (I though most if not all) come in both formats?

Yes, most of them do. A place like Amazon.com or Buy.com would be the most likely candidate to carry both versions. Also, a DVD-only rental company such as NetFlix.com might have them.
