Using a Linksys BEFW11S4 Ver. 4 Wireless-B router w/a Mac

Hi, I have a 15" PowerBook G4 1 GHz laptop that I use at my dad's place on the router described above. My laptop has a built-in Apple Airport (802.11b) card.

I can interact with the router just fine (Internet works and everything), but I've been having trouble trying to set a WEP key that actually works on the Mac. I've tried setting both 64- and 128-bit keys on the router, but I'm unable to access the router with the key I set (forces me to physically reset the router every time).

I went to Linksys's website and read through the FAQs and they all seemed to indicate that the WEP key feature only works with Linksys brand wireless adapters (which mine is obviously not). But that seems strange to me, because isn't WEP supposed to be a standard?

Any thoughts on this?

I just had a friend set up his Powerbook (same model as yours!) to interoperate with my cheap Gigafast router. When your Mac asks for the password, you need to enter the 10-digit or 26-digit hex WEP key; entering the ASCII passphrase won't work.

I setup this model router with Orinoco Gold wireless cards in my PC laptops. No problems here.

Good luck with your router though, most people have serious problems with them, including me... Check dslreports.com forums for more details, or just google for it.
