Using a joystick in HL2

A coworker of mine just got the orange box for her PC and wanted to play it using a joystick. I suggested that she get the MS Xbox 360 control pad for the PC but she got a logitech dual shock instead.

She brought her notebook in and I messed around with the settings in HL but cant seem to get the pad to work like on a console (can't strafe).

Is there a way to set up a profile in windows so that when you launch HL those profile controller settings are already saved?
 
Are you using the logitech program that maps keys? You can set that to launch games. I use that to get my throttle working in MW:Living Legends.
