Using a fax on a multi-line system

How do you get a fax machine to dial out on a multi-line system? The machine I set up will send a fax on a single line system without a problem.

However, when I plug the fax into a jack that had a multi-line phone attached to it, it doesn't get a dial tone. The multi-line phone is attached to the fax, and the fax is attached to the phone jack. When you pick up the phone and choose a line you get a dial tone. Should there be a button to press on the fax before sending to choose a line? Can a fax work on this kind of line? Thanks.

The way i do it is to put the adaptor straight onto the phone line, then put the fax/phone rj11 [haha] into the adaptor.

No probs.
Although, I remember, i did have a problem some time ago when i connected a cheap to the line instead.

I had a similar problem... make SURE that you use a 2 conductor cable and not a 4 conductor cable. I couldn't get dial-tone until I used the two conductor. HTH

HP has a Fax Wizard, in with the software, and you can configure it there, just select the option for installing on the line with an Answering machine. If its not hooked up to a computer, you'll have to read the Manual, and configure it from the menu. Any RJ11 cord should work.
