using a faster PIII than an older mobo "supports"

I asked this question a few weeks ago, but have gotten conflicted responses.

I have an ABIT BX6-r2 slot1 mobo. The latest BIOS supports up to a PIII-700. Someone said that since PIII's have their multiplier locked, I could use a faster PIII, like an 800 or 900 (100 MHz FSB legall, or 133 MHz if my AGP card can take it ;)

Can anyone confirm this for me before I go but a new CPU? I know an new Athlon system would be cheap and a lot faster, but I"m A.) Too lazy to rebuild, and B.) have video capture cards, and tons of other hardware that I don't want to have to fight with to get to work together again!

You can get FCPGA versions of the P!!!1000E to run in that board. Officially these boards don't support the FCPGA because of the lack of proper sub-2.0 voltage. The right slotkets, with voltage regulators built into them, remedy this problem.

Any PIII or Celeron should work in it. Its been done many times. The 133 FSB CPU's will put the AGP @ 89 MHz. Some video cards work @ that speed, some dont. I've put 1 Gig CPU's in ABIT BX6, BH6, ASUS P3B-F. They all work just fine.

OK, thanks. Someone here said it would work before, then a computer store I've ordered parts from in the past said it wouldn't work. I believe that it will but wanted to hear more from others.

I currently have a PIII-500 (Katmai core) with my FSB @ 117 (CPU@585MHz and AGP@77.2) I have a Matrox Marvel G400 (I do video editing and love it's 2d quality and dual-head feature.) My systems runs day and night like this.

My system will post, but will suffer a registery error then reboot if I try to go into Win98 with my FSB @ 124. I haven't tried it since I installed Win2K. I'm not sure what component doesn't like that speed, perhaps my Marvel is refusing to initialize properly when Windows switches into a graphical mode? I have Coarsair and Mushkin CL2 PC133.

Anywho, I just need a few more CPU MHz for now. Even with a slower FSB and memory than newer generations my computer is very quick and responsive which I somewhat attribute to my 7200 RPM WD drives.

Im currently running a 600mhz celeron on a Abit-Bx6-2 with the latest bios, the celery is a 9x multiplier so i'm running it @ 928 (103mhz bus x9) running totally stable...Just bought a p3 1ghz (133mhz bus) see how that works out when i get it.....

You should have no problem running up to a 1G P3 on there, just make sure the slocket adapter you buy has the ability to adjust the voltage. I have a BH6 running a 900 Celeron, even though ABIT says only supports up to 700...

The slocket does not "adjust" the voltage. The mobo does. The jumpers on a Slocket send a signal to the mobo telling it what voltage to use.

*waves finger*

Some slotkets do alter the voltage, hence I said, "The right slotkets, with voltage regulators built into them, remedy this problem."

Like a $70 Powerleap? Why would you want one of them when all you need is a $10 Slocket?

Because some of the early BX boards only go down to 2.0 volts, which is way too high for a Celeron. Most went down to 1.8 volts, while the last ones were often supporting sub-1.6 volts. He's best to play it safe than sorry.

We don't want to lead this guy into getting a Talautin processor and all of a sudden burning out his $150 processor. :)

A BX6 r2 is not one of them. Even the BX6 r1 and early BH6 support lower Vcores. The poster was asking about a BX6 r2 with a CuMine, not a Tualatin. All you need for that setup is a $10 Slocket.

Are you sure? The r1.02 model supports down to 1.8 volts. But I didn't see any documentation supporting <1.8v on pre-1.02 boards. You really ought to give him a source to confirm this before he does just go out and try it. Its an expensive mistake if it doesn't work.

I've seen people post that they have done the upgrade with the BX6 R2 boards. I've done it myself on a BX6 R1 board (1.75 Vcore). I never had a BX6 R2. I don't have 1st Exp with that one. I have also upgraded 3 BH6 R1 to Cumines 1.75 Vcore with no issue. These boards are all older than a BX6 R2.

A quick search on the abit Usenet group:

<< > I have an old BX6 Rev 2.0 withthe latest bios update. It runs a celeron 433
> but I was wondering if it would take the latest 100MHz bus Coppermine CPU's
> ?

It will work fine with any coppermine 100Mhz bus cpu (including the 1.1GHz
Celeron) but you need a coppermine FC-PGA compatible slotket adapter.

I'm running a celeron 900 in my BX6r2, works great.

Below is a quote from AnandTech's BX6 R2 article Here

My bx6-2 supports lower voltage....mine is down to 1.60, just go in the bios>softmenu and see how low your voltage goes!

I'll have to check what voltages mine does. I'm not sure off hand.

I work as a systems analyst for a large university. I know computer hardware well, so you don't have to worry about me burning out my CPU with too much voltage.

I thought that Tualitin's only worked with the 815e chipset? I'm just planning on getting a coppermine. I'll have to see what their voltage requirements are and what slotkits offer what.

Thanks for the info.

There is an adapter from Powerleap that allows you to use a Tualatin for ~ $70. Or, if you are handy with a soldering iron..........look here

Maybe instead of saying this:

<< You should have no problem running up to a 1G P3 on there, just make sure the slocket adapter you buy has the ability to adjust the voltage. I have a BH6 running a 900 Celeron, even though ABIT says only supports up to 700... >>

I should have just said make sure the slocket you buy is Coppermine or FC-PGA compatible...
