using a dsl/router for only the router

ok, i have a Cayman (Netopia) 3220H ADSL modem with a built in router. i no longer use DSL, as i now have a cable broadband connection. i would like to know if there is any way i can use the router part of the cayman to hook up another computer in my home to the cable connection.
i assume not, but i thought i would at least find out for sure before i go out and buy another router.

Does the router have a wan port other than the modems phone line out? A normal standalone home router will have one lan and one wan port (both rj45). You'll need that wan port to connect to your cable modem.

well those routers haver the lan port and the DSL port only. You need to find someone willing to trade you that DSL modem/router for a stright router. Cheapies are $100 good lasting routers are expensive (I got a $1000 model and am looking at a newer $2000 model for my house.

Agreed. If you spend more than 50 bucks on a SOHO NAT router your probably getting burned. Granted, you can go out and buy a 1000 dollar router if your studying for an exam or you just REALLY want to get very involved with your LAN routing, but for 90% of the home broadband population, and perhaps an even higher percentage, any cheap (and cheap is not 100 bucks) router off the shelf will suffice.

wow, i was scared for aminute there! i cant spend 100 bucks on a router! the dsl modem i have (the cayman) is a really nice one, it has an awesome firewall (never got a virus, not even one and i have no software firewall installed), and was easy to set up. i just plugged everything in. done.
can anyone recommend a decently priced cable modem with a router integrated that is similar?

I am not tying to be oppositional, hopefully you are willing to absorb some knowledge.

1. Stand alone Firewalls (Router or Software) Do Not protect you from Viruses. If you do not have AntiVirus program you are Not Protected and you just been ?Lucky?. In addition Router?s NAT Firewalls do not block uncontrolled transmission Out and thus do not block Trojan activity.

Link to: Internet infestation -Or, how you are getting Internet "Junk" in and compromise your Computer/Network?

2. The Router part of the Modem/Router combo is rather limited Router, most stand alone Cable/DSL Routers have better Firewall (many with SPI), and they are very inexpensive.

If you have already a Cable Modem you can get a Router for $10 you would be better protected, and have more flexible system than a $100 Cable/Router Modem combo.
