Using a crossover cable to transfer data...

I have a client who has both a laptop (XP) and a desktop (98). He uses dial-up for internet access on both machines.

At present, he uses a USB data cable to transfer files back and forth between PCs. This is a very manual process, prone to errors, and is somewhat slow. That's when I thought of having him use a crossover cable with an "idiot proof" batch file to complete the transfer.

Here's the question:

Assuming I set a static IP address on the ethernet card of each PC and leave them in place, will this interfere with his ability to connect to the internet via dial-up? Logic says no, but I have never run this scenario before.

I would parse the issue into two parts.

One - Direct Connection between computers.

Link to: How I connect two computers to exchange files.

Two ? How to Transfer the files.

There is a lot of Sync. Programs (some free) that you can set for him in order to easily sync, copy, move etc., files between the two computers.

Example: ALLnSync - directory and file synchronizer.

This one is actually a Software RAID that mirrors automatically: MirrorFolder - real-time backup of your files.

Having a functional network card in a computer does not bother the dialup connection
Via Modem.
