Using a cellphone to "dial in" to a network, is it possible?

Ok, so I can dial the number of dial up connection on my cell phone and get the noise associated with a modem.

Is there a way to use the cell phone in some sort of voice mode as a modem, or phone line?

I know i can do this by paying for data service for my cell phone, but I'd rather not, and I have extra nights/weekend minutes that I could use.

I realize it might be slow because of the quality of the connection, but slow is better than nothing.....

Any ideas?

yea it can be done, but you'll probably be limited to 19.2k or worse speeds.... best I ever pulled of was 12000bps... I used an audiovox phone and there was an add-on to hookit up to a serial port (already had an internal modem). Speeds were ungodly slow though

Scratch that, I found the cables. It seems the real question is software. What software did you use?

Thanks,

Only thing i used was the audiovox... dunno about the Nokia, when I hooked it up to the serial port win2k detected it as a new modem, then I plugged in the drivers and it then showed up as another modem on the laptop.... then I just dialed out as usual.

It's more common for your laptop's modem to be "cellular compatible". You'd typically get a data/modem cable for your Nokia, then plug it into your modem and use it to dial as normal. Abzstrak, if you were gettting 12K, you were very lucky - Most average cell connections are in the 2400-4800 range. Not terribly functional!

I see a couple usb to nokia or serial to nokia that say uses include sending/recieving faxes(which would be the same thing as a modem, although possibly slower) Would I just use the cable, and go for it, or would it be more complicated?

Thanks,
