using a a palm pilot to control playlist on pc

Hello,

I haven't done any research into this yet but I figured I would put this out there in case there is any experts out there in this regard...
I basically want to find an old palm pilot or some sort of device with wi-fi that could be used to control winamp, specifically creating and controlling playlists on winamp or some other music/video software on a windows xp machine. If anyone could point me in the right direction, and let me know whether or not this is currently possible.

Ah yes, I see what you are trying to do there, make yourself a cheap around the house remote control, its the smart thing to do really. I did it before, but on a more complex level using my previous phone (Nokia E61) to SSH to my own home server. I wrote my own software and shell scripts and executed them on my home Linux server, but I didn't use WiFi (it does have WiFi though and could have used that) I used my cellphone's internet connection (back then I had the T-mobile $6 T-zones unlimited internet) that way I had control over the tasks I was controlling from anywhere I had cellphone reception.

I have thought your restrictions through, I am assuming you don't have the ability to write your own software right? In that case, the best solution I can think of right now is to get a PDA with web browsing capability and use the Browse Amp Winamp plugin, that way you can use any device that has a web browser (or even something like a PSP) and control your music.

It seems also Iremote might just work for this, I would investigate it further if I were you.

I don't have the capability to write software, unfortunately, but if it took some lightweight scripting, I'd be willing to take the time to figure it out. Thanks for the insight about this, hopefully sometime soon I'll be able to take a look into this a little further.

Edit- just clicked on that Iremote link... the description refers to "handhelds". Is he referring to PDA's? If so then that sound exactly like what I had in mind!

Also, I don't know much about pda's. Any buying recommendations or suggestions as to the pda OS necessary for this sort of project?

Now research platforms that Iremote runs on, I know it's written in Java and I know for sure it runs on Symbian phones, but you want the best cheapest phone that has a compatible platform check around.

What about a cheap PDA rather than a cell phone? Something that could be dedicated so that other members of the house could use it also. Cheap is better also. Would this work?

Reading the description of the software it seems like it can run on PocketPC PDA's. PocketPC PDA's are all over Ebay for prices many are about $30. Keep in mind that you need to have a WiFi capable pocketPC PDA and that Iremote seems to cost $20 for the full version. Investigate around see what is up, see what you can do with the free version, see what options you can find on Ebay. I looked around real quick and noticed Dell Axim PDAs for around $40 shipped. I am not sure what price points you had in mind but I am sure you can figure it out

Edit: There are many version of PocketPC form 2000 all the way to Windows Mobile 6.x which ones can Iremote run on? look that up

It let's you extend your desktop to a pda. If you watch the screen shots, one of them shows a winamp play list.

those look cool, but i don't think you could do wirelessly.

Check out Salling Clicker. It will let you control most media players (WMP, Winamp, Itunes) via Wifi or bluetooth. I used the palm client before with my Tungsten T via bluetooth and it worked pretty good, I was able to control my media from out on the deck. I am now looking into the Windows Mobile client to use on my HTC touch and the phones data connection, although I have not tested this setup yet, if it wont work with the data connection I can always fall back to bluetooth.

there are a lot of option out there such as salling clicker, netremote, jeyo remote and a few other ones. have you guys used these out programs? i want to get the best one and stick with that.
