using a 60mm to 80mm adaptor on 6cu+

I went and spent about 200$ on a new case, PSU, fans, and UV cathodes to update my old setup. I'm going to stick with my Athlon XP1600+ @ 1752mhz for about another 6 months before I upgrade to a Athlon64 setup. My Volcano 6cu+ is WAY louder than the rest of my system now due to the 7000rpm 60mm fan on it (over 40db) and I've been looking at putting a 80mm fan on it with an adaptor to push the same amount of air but quiter and a slower RPM. How well do these adaptors work? the fan on the 6cu+ is rated at 38cfm @ 39db which is probibly over exagerated.
 
The problem with adaptors is that they create air turbulences (that make noise) that effectively negate the advantage of the larger fan to push the same amount of air at lower rpm (and thus less noise). I would rather invest in a good CPU cooler that can be used on the Athlon 64 as well as your current CPU.
 
I've done it with a HHC-001, put a thermaltake 80mm fan rated at 38CFM, very little sound then.... the original fan was 7500rpm 60mm.

I also taped some plastic about halfway down the fins to force the air nearer to the base of the sink... overall the fan and ducting ended up give me a 3C temp drop.
 
They work alright, but it's generally worth it to just buy urself a thermalright heatsink that runs a 80mm fan imo.
 
I'm not too worried about it keeping cool, it stays plenty cool the way it is. I see 14*c above case temp at 100% load, usually stays under 45*C
 
they work, i cool a 2000+ palo with one. for stock cooling, its fine. or small oc. esp with a chip thats worthless like that... as long as it stays below 55c or so.. who cares. the adaptor has the problem that radial fans suck at fighting back pressure. if you stacked two 80mm fans with a fan frame inbetween (cut out fan outa old fan or something) then the fans working in series would better force air through. or get a blower.

see here. http://fox302.com/index.pl?s=vf&user=oroo&category=Case&file=xpiderside1.jpg thats a fan adaptor. does better then the low rpm 60mm that was on there before. and well 60-80mm fan adaptors can be found cheap, since they are near obsolete since aftermarket heatsinks have moved to 80mm and above these days. i think i got the damned thing for a dollar. its uv reactive too as u can see. not great for uber cooling, but it works.
 
For as cheap as they are, it is worth a shot.

My son has a 1600+ (Palomino) also. Man those pallies run hot. Gonna stick it on with a Panaflo U1A when I get a chance.(I have too many projects going right now!)
