Using 2 slots of cable modem...(question)

Simple question...can you use both usb / ethernet slots of the cable modem at the same time? (i.e. two internet connections at once)

I've tried this with mine but I'm getting random interruptions in connections...is something wrong with the modem or should i not be doing this??

Thanks

The cable modem cant distribute signals, unless its a modem/router combo - you can connect either ethernet or usb not both. Get a router , they are 20~30$, esp. 802b wireless ones and use it as wired router.

Some cable modems support the use of both their USB ports and their Ethernet ports simultaneously. HOWEVER, unless your ISP provides you with multiple IP addresses, you will have serious issues. If you want to share your Internet connection with more than one PC, and if your cable modem doesn't have a built-in router, you'll need to supply a separate Ethernet router, hook it to the Ethernet port of your cable modem, and not use the USB port at all.

I know that with my older model surboard, you can use both the USB and ethernet but it is only a basic switch rather than a router. Each connection will get its own globally addressable IP which is actually kind of nice if your ISP allows it. The only problem is that most ISP's will charge you extra money for multiple IP addresses--usually they make you pay for a static IP and then they give you a max of 5 IPs.

It will work if you give them money but 2 months of paying that fee will be all it takes to become more expensive than a basic ethernet router.
