uses for a Cisco 2611 router

Right now i'm bordering on broke... but I do want to get a Cisco lab going so I can run small simulations.

I know someone who is offering me a Cisco 2611 w/ the serial and ISDN BRI WIC modules installed. He's asking for $350... but it only has 16mb of DRAM which limits the IOS upgrades.

I wanted to know if getting another router will help me with my current setup (806, 1601)?

For $350 its a steal!! You can always get the RAM upgrade later. Otherwise start hitting ebay for a 2500.

Definitally go for it. You can upgrade the ram in that. the 2600 series are nice routers. Would like to get one to exapand my cisco lab.

I dunno. If you're near broke, it might be better to just buy Sim software.

$350 is a great price, but a serial cable would cost another $100.00, IOS upgrade will cost at least that, memory upgrade...probably more, and there's no easy way to simulate an ISDN connection...you couldn't even go "crossover" to another router...ISDN doesn't work like that.

So you end up with a box that you can't connect to anything...just something to run old IOS commands on...but no way to tell if the config is working.

I'm thinking you could get a pretty decent SIM package for half of that (or buy time on a web SIM.

It's nice to have the hardware, but it's much nicer to have hardware that DOES something......

Just my two cents...

Cisco DRAM is pretty generic stuff. You can pick up a 32 MB board at Crucial for about $30. Don't sweat the DRAM.

Yeah, the ISDN thing is something that does bother me... unless I get an Adtran Atlas or something, I really can't do much with the ISDN BRI port... other than sell it.

As for the software, my instructor has a CCO account that will allow for free IOS downloads... and i'm going to see what needs to be done for me to upgrade my CCO account to do the same.

Additional flash for the unit is a killer... but it's true, the DRAM can be bought for pretty cheap. I think I saw 32mb on e*ay for about $25.

The only advantage i've seen with a hardware lab over a software lab is that you actually get to troubleshoot problems with the hardware lab.

But again, it all comes down to me being strapped for cash... so let's see.

but it, sell for a lot more, and then buy a lesser router, or maybe something else fun to add to your lab, like a pix firewall. that would be fun and you would have a little cash left over

It's unlikely that your instructor has a cco contract to download any software he wants "for free."

Yes, once you have a software maintenance contract, and once you're logged in, it'll let you download anything...but most contracts are for specific software.

The contracts are also usually written for specific hardware (by serial number)...

The bottom line is, I guess, that you shouldn't be taking software that you haven't paid for.

FWIW

I'll give ya 450, heck maybe even two grand. at 250 that is a super steal. Make sure he didn't steal it.

If he is offering it to you for that price then I've got some speakers I'd love to sell you. they fell off a white van....your lucky day!

PS - the ISDN wic alone retails for more than 350 I believe.

<edit> to scotts point...downloading IOS and installing it on a router you don't have maintenance on is like copying windows2000 server from your buddy (or groups) and installing it on your home box and then asking this forum why you can't "see" your server. 🙂🙂🙂🙂 it is illegal, your call. I cannot and will not offer support on pirated software. You want support???? - then call the people you bought it from.

PSS - xyyz, I'd love to help you but felt the urge to set the record straight given many others may be reading this thread. I will continue to do my best, but at the same time reinforce the fact that IOS is not free. Case in point - our maintenance contract with cisco is 500K per year.

Sheesh... I never said that i'd download the software off of my instructor. You people really need to read what is being said... and please do not put words in my mouth.

<< As for the software, my instructor has a CCO account that will allow for free IOS downloads... and i'm going to see what needs to be done for me to upgrade my CCO account to do the same. >>

Note this is what I said orignally... no editing has been done.

I said, that my instructor has a CCO account that does allow free software downloads. And it's not hardware specific. I know this because my instructor was able to download software for platforms that weren't included in either one of her hardware kits. I guess it's a bonus of running a Cisco Academy or something... either way, I'm going to see if there's anyway to upgrade my account to have this ablity. I know for a FACT she isn't paying 500k a year for a maintenance contract.

I know there are different levels for the CCO account, for example, I have access to their e-learning, but someone else I know doesn't have access to e-learning.

Again, I'm not sure if it works this way, but it still warants a call to my account rep to see what's going on.

If there is no way, then I have no problem sticking with the current IOS.

anyways...

i might do what was suggested in buying the item (taking a loan from someone) and then selling it and buying a used 1700 or a used 1600 or two...

illl buy it off you for 450 bucks...!!!!!!!

OR if you want something less, ill give you 300 bucks and my 2501 with 8megs of RAM, 12.3 IOS
