Uses for a 600mhz machine?

I have a bunch of random parts laying around, that except for a case, would add up to an entire new computer.

I just don't know if the result would be worth having.

I've got an VIA fanless ITX mobo w/600mhz processor, 512DDR ram, and a PCI Radeon 9250. Also have a spare 40g HD and a DVD drive lying around, so all I'd really need to pick up would be a case and PS.

Seeing as I already have three machines, should I just dump the parts? Or build it?

So what are you asking? Do you want to know what to do with it? Because I would keep it and find some use for it (HTTP, FTP, etc server) or something to the like.

I have an old HP Pavilion 465MHz Celeron, from 1999.
Use it to download large files overnight, so I can turn
off main expensive PC. It is frustratingly S L O W, but
as long as I'm not awake to see it in its' sad state, it's fine.

Oh, in that case... It seems logical to simply get rid of it.
Ask around if anyone needs the parts, post them for sale.

I NEED ONE JUST LIKE THAT! Seriously I do, for a basic proxy server (a bit complicated why).

Only thing is, I'm flat broke 😛

das computer ist gut fur nichts!

if u really cant find any use for it, then you could sell it. i would buy it if u were anywhere in NE ohio

slap a couple NICs in it and make a router...

It's an ITX mobo...which means just one PCI slot, which is already taken up by the graphics card.

Sounds like time to sell the parts.

Throw it away or donate it to your local United Way - they always need PCs.

There's no case, for one, and for number two, the United Way doesn't get anything from me anymore since I found out how little of what you send them actually gets to the people in need.

Well, selling on ebay is an option. You could sell all of it together or maybe package the motherboard, CPU, and RAM. Really, those components can make a very useful system. In summer 2004, I assembled a system, using my old motherboard with a 600MHz Duron processor and 384MB PC133 memory, for my nephew to use at college. He had bought Win XP Pro and Office 2003 at the college bookstore for an unbelievably low price. Office 2003 runs fine on it.

You might also buy the case and PS, assemble the system, then maybe sell it.

These are exactly the kind of systems I assemble for my Eastern Europe charity project. I assure you there are people out there who would be extremely grateful for such a rig (hey, the specs were *hot* for us as well, about 5 years ago!)

Any of the above, we use an older P3/ 1Gig/ V5 5500/ W98 machine to load/play all of our older (pre-'99) games on. HL, Doom, Quake 1,2,3, NFS 1,2,3 , Flight Sims etc; older Programs and such.

It saves space on the newer rigs.

yeah me too but he only has one pci slot on his board. taken by a video card... an unfortunate state of affairs, does it have any isa slots?

Keep in mind that not too many years ago, 600MHz was considered blazingly fast. It's just as fast now as it was then.
