Do you feel the wheel is not sensitive enough? I notice it a lot when scrolling down.

just click the wheel one notch down and see if it registers scrolling downward on every "click"

when i scroll up it seems a lot more accurate.
 
I have the notebook version...works great for me. Logitech is good about replacing stuff though, you should be fine.
 
I picked up a vx revolution a couple of weeks ago for my notebook and didn't have any issues adjusting sensitivity with the gear adjustment on the bottom of the mouse for the scroll wheel. You might also make sure you installed the setpoint software for the mouse and set the line scroll speed of the wheel and see if it helps.

I know I found it amusing to set the scroll wheel to it's highest gear so that you can spin it freely and scroll long documents to the end really quickly. Then you can set the gear to the other end to have the traditional clicky feel of a scroll wheel to scroll down your set number of lines per scroll click.
