User settings wont be saved

On a Compaq Deskpro PIII PC with W2K SP4 installed, any attempt to change the background, or even on a Word 2003 when trying to set numerals as context, all these settings just wont be saved, as though you did change nothing.
Any Ideas why is this happening?

What account are you doing this under? Did you change your account settings?

I have run into some problems of this sort with MS Office that were resolved by Office Update.

will accually im doin it on a Power User account, which is assumed to allow me save my settings.
As for the Office issue, im running Office 2003 Pro with the only update I found on the net installed
