User Permissions for Windows 2000

Dedpuhl

Lifer
I want to set up my computer for my roommates. I am running windows 2000. I want to make it so they cannot:

a) install/uninstall programs
b) see each others files
c) make ANY system changes

The ONLY permissions I want them to have are:

a) internet access
b) ability to use the programs installed
c) save and open their own files

How can I set up the users to only have these permissions? Even as a guest user they can install stuff. I don't want this to happen.

ANY help would be great appreciated!

thanks

just create an account for them and make them a "user" You can modify their priveleges once you setup the account.

Taken from w2k help:

Users cannot modify system-wide registry settings, operating system files, or program files. Users can shut down workstations, but not servers. Users can create local groups, but can manage only the local groups that they created. They can run certified Windows 2000 programs that have been installed or deployed by administrators. Users have full control over all of their own data files (%userprofile%) and their own portion of the registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER).

Users cannot install programs that can be run by other Users (this prevents Trojan horse programs). They also cannot access other Users' private data or desktop settings.

First, you know you must make individual users and require them to log on each time. Next, you are intending on having "Restricted Users". In your control panel the user account control will allow you to make your user accounts. After putting a user in an account, you can assign permissions to your HDs by right clicking on the HD icon in My Computer and setting sharing options. In Sharing option there is a permissions setting. You can set each user a unique set of access rights to any HD. This is especially nice if your OS is on a unique partition, then you simply block all access to this HD. Hope this gets you where you want.

duh I forgot all about that.

thanks a bunch!!! 🙂

You also want NTFS as FAT32 or 16 doesn't provide any security, or file access limitations. When I tried to use win 2k and FAT 32 it would let me access anything from any user. Reformatted for NTFS and reinstalled win 2k and I was set. Now it behaves like it should.
