Ok, this has happened on a regular basis since we got our new workstations in. We got them in three "waves", so the people who got the first round got P2-300's, second wave got P2-350's, third wave got P2-450's. Also got new desktop printers in at the same time to replace older printers.

The problem has arisen from users thinking that if they break their old equipment they will get new. Obviously they saw few that honestly had broken equipment get new, so they just put their deductive thinking caps on and said, "Ugh! me break printer, me gets new printer". I will admit it took me a couple times to catch on to their scheme, but now I have it all worked out. In surplus I have 100's of workstations <P166's> and 100's of printers <Old, slow, sh!t> I just reclaimed about half of my surplus and put it in storage. Now anyone that I suspect has broken their equipment in order to upgrade gets a downgrade, and a warning that if this one breaks it will get even worse.

Why are people so inconsiderate with their employers money/equipment. Until this, I would never have guessed a bunch of corporate, white collar workers could sink to this level. If you are a user, treat the equipment as if it were your own. Maybe you cant see us IT guys in the server room, but we are there before you get there in the morning and way after you leave at night. Please have pity on us. If I come in looking like I only got 3 hours sleep, it is because after trying to keep your email going so that you can send your buddy the latest joke or nude picture, I ONLY GOT 3 HOURS SLEEP!!

How far were they going to "break" the equipment?

If you find evidence, can't those people get fired? I mean, one would assume that they would want their company to prosper. Do these idiots not realize that when they steal from the company, they steal from themselves?

The stupidity of the average person never ceases to sicken, and yet amaze, me.

Hehe I never heard of someone breaking their equipment, but people do lie a lot about this and that not working. Where I am at now, if they want a new piece of EQ, they have to charge it to their cost center and explain the charge to their boss. Solves a lot of problems.

In one instance a fellow co-worker told me that the user told her that she had done it for this reason. In a few others the users were complaining about their equipment for no real reason, and keep complaining hoping to get new, and then suddenly an unfixable part shears off. Unfortunatly, it takes an act of god for anyone to be let go at my place of employment. Here all computer equipment and software falls under the IT budget. So their departments request at will.

warcleric, that's two in a row you've posted that seems to mirror what I see. Just a few months ago, one user has his notebook "stolen" from the office. Funny how his story changed 3 times and he was very insistant on NOT calling the police. All door entry and access records indicate no one in the office during the time he claims the system was taken. If I was a thief, who would I take his and leave the 10 other notebooks in adjoining cubes untouched? Also strange that he backed up everything to the server a few hours before the suspected breakin. A little suspicious that all requisition requests he had placed were turned down since his PC was less than a year old. of course he claimes this is the only time he ever left his PC in the office. What made it worse was that several of the cleaning crew were questioned over the whole incident. It's impossible for them to be in the office because there was NO cleaning service scheduled on that day.

Since there was no proof the system was or was not stolen, this douche bag ended up with a brand new notebook PC. As of today, the stories has again changed at least 3 times. I can't believe his boss didn't can his sorry ass.

I had one user (woman) (blonde) who wanted to put her potted plant on top of her monitor. She was warned many times not to do this. Well, she spilled water into her 20 inch monitor and shorted it out. We replaced it with a 17 inch used monitor. She didn't like that and complained. She continued to put her plants on the 17 inch monitor and (we think) purposely spilled water into this monitor. We then replaced it with a 14 inch monitor explaining that if she does it again, that we will consider it malicious damage and will bill her for the damage. She quit the next week.

Cool warcleric, I'm flattered. Perhaps I need a stress relief project. Maybe start a AnandTech BOFH page and collect stories from the members. :)
