User can open some webpages, but not all

Wasn't sure what subforum to put this in. Move if necessary mods 🙂

I've got a user who is able to open a couple webpages, but all other ones time out.
DNS lookups are working properly.
I'm able to ping and tracert end-to-end.
AV comes up clean.
Proxy is set to auto-detect.
I've used 3 different browsers.
FTP works through browsers fine.
Internal web pages work fine.
Only www.mozilla.com and www.yahoo.com seem to load. Most other pages will load the title bar up top (ie, when I type in www.anandtech.com, it says "Anandtech: your source for hardware analysis and news", but doesn't load the body).

What am I missing? I just installed ad-aware and I'm rebooting now, so we'll see if that comes up with anything.

Look at what versions of Flash and Java are loaded. You may need to upgrade both. What browser are you using? Have you tried downloading a new browser and attempting the same with that?

yeah, I have tried opera, IE, and FF. All three have the same issues with the same pages. I'm able to bring yahoo.com and mozilla.com up on all 3.

are you sure mozilla and yahoo aren't just cached?

Should be reason they are pulling up.

Sounds like virus/malware.

This is most likely the problem. Good luck with this one, it sound like a ton of fun...

If you really want to see what's going on load up wireshark and get a packet capture.

Probably just gonna do a rebuild. I'm not on-site or else I would try my laptop.

I'm done investing time in this one... (Just had to prove to the service desk guys that it was NOT a network issue... had $20 riding).

anandtech is giving him title bar info, how would that be cached?

you can ping both mozilla and yahoo .com from anywhere but not anandtech

Edit:

I'm able to ping and tracert end-to-end.

Do you have MS OneCare installed? I've had problems on XP with OneCare, since it sets up the Windows Firewall with group policies (even though XP Home doesn't supposedly support them), and sometimes, something doesn't load right, and web pages take forever to load and time out, but the title bar will come up.

Check the MTU settings. May need to lower it or increase it depending on what it is. I've seen it before (most of the time you shouldn't have this problem though).

It can be edited in the registry: google it. Please backup your registry before making any changes to it.
