Newsgroupdirect ran this promo last time on May 10th and are doing it again. Here is a link to the thread from slickdeals the last time they did it:

Really awesome deal for those that are not super heavy downloaders that don't need an unlimited plan. No site can beat this price, Astraweb charges $25 for 180GB and blocknews charges like $90 for 1TB. Link below for the deal.

For those that already know about Usenet you can ignore the following:-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once you figure out Usenet, you'll probably never go back to torrents, I only use torrents now for the occasional hard to find thing.

Here are all the links for the Usenet guides I found helpful when I wanted to learn about it. Read through them all and you should have a good grasp of how it works and everything. If you need help to get started or can't figure something out just post a reply in this thread or PM me.

Guides:

Other websites that you should browse around:

To get started, the first thing I would do is go download the free clients Sabnzbd and Binreader and see which one you like. Both are Usenet clients, just like utorrent is to bittorent or jdownloader/IDM is to the file uploading sites like Rapidshare/Filesonic/etc. Binreader is extremely simplistic but it works decently (great for noobs), Sabnzbd is more complicated but it's better. Some people don't care for it though because the only way to access it is through the web, since it is a Python server. Play around with both and read the wiki manual for Sabnzbd so you understand how it works. I forgot to mention that Binreader doesn't work with SSL for newsgroupdirect so instead of Binreader try Unzbin for a super easy to use NZB downloader if you don't like Sabnzbd.

Next, you should create accounts on nzbmatrix and nzbsrus. For free accounts they limit the number of nzb's you can download per day and the retention time but you can still download fine. If you like usenet it is worth paying the $10 or so fee to become a VIP member for nzbmatrix that way there are no restrictions, that is what I did and nzbmatrix is the only site I use.

Next, you need to find a usenet provider. The above deal is great for a first time starter since you only have to pay $50 and you can download 1TB of whatever. If you're a really heavy downloader then I would suggest the unlimited $10 a month Astraweb plan or the $10 a month usenetserver plan. I've read several postings in forums where people that have usenetserver as their provider say they split the plan with a friend so it comes out to $5 a month per person. Most providers do not allow 2 IP's to be connected at the same time from the same account, but apparently usenetserver is relaxed. If I decided to go with an unlimited plan it would probably be usenetserver.

To get those $10 a month unlimited plans go here:

Wow, great deal, but I did the Astraweb almost a year ago and still have about 100G left. I'm not sure I would ever download a TB. ;)

Any suggestions on a good newsgroup indexing site? One I used to use ran out of gas.

nzbmatrix and nzbsrus like I mentioned in my OP. I've been using nzbmatrix most of the time and it's great. Hardly any dupes/spam/fake crap and alot of stuff has comments on it so you can read what people are saying on it. Nzbmatrix is one of the top NZB indexers for a reason, trust me...join it now. You will have to pay $10 though to be able to download older stuff and not be limited, but it is totally worth it. I believe it is $10 for 10 years or lifetime, I can't remember.

Can somebody that buys this deal tell me what it shows for your usage stats in your account settings?

"Once you figure out Usenet, you'll probably never go back to torrents, I only use torrents now for the occasional hard to find thing."

Why?

I have heard about this, but what is the advantage over torrents?

Bunch of reasons, your chances of getting sued or receiving a copyright infringement notice is next to nill. Also, you can download anything at your full ISP speed, no need for seeders.

some advice is needed.

I started nearly a month ago on usenet and have been getting a few broken files. Is that more likely do to the search source, provider, or just bad luck with files? From the comments, it seems like it works for others.

mostly it is a rar file that says archive is either in unknown format or damaged when I try to open it.

Why do so many usenet files have pw's on them now? Even freeware and documentaries are pw protected. WTF.

i dont know why people are so in love with newsgroups. imo torrents are far superior. everytime i have tried to use newsgroups i always go back to torrents within days.

and i dont think torrents are less secure, at least not when you use encryption. i also believe newsgroups will be shut down someday, whereas you cant kill torrents. it would be pretty much impossible.

Try using a site like nzbsrus or nzbmatrix, nzbsrus is better if you don't want to pay any money but you are limited to 5 NZB's per day. I don't get many broken or incomplete things. I've had 1 or 2 things so far that couldn't be fixed, but they were old files anyways.

Have you tried out Sabnzbd? It automatically does the repair using par2's if the file is missing articles and also extracts everything for you.

Newsgroups are great for people who want to download at full speed and people who want to be 100% protected because you don't have to worry about being sued or receiving any kind of notices. The encryption in utorrent can help, but it's not fool proof. The only way to be protected using torrents is a proxy like btguard or torrentprivacy but those cost I think around $7-$10 a month, why pay that when you can pay a usenet provider the same thing (if you get an unlimited plan) and get full speed from your ISP and be protected as well. I'm not a heavy downloader so paying $50 for 1TB of downloads is great for usenet and I don't have to worry about being sued or anything else.

Torrent sites are great, but I keep on reading how more and more people are being sued, the last I read around 20K people were sued for downloading "The Expendables." No thanks.
