Would MS honor the 3 year warranty even if I bought the system used since there is defect in the cooling? Or would it be a bad idea to buy a 360 at this point?

The warranty terms state
A. WARRANTIES

* One Year Express Warranty on Console (Three Years for Three Lights Flashing Red). Subject to the terms and conditions of this Limited Warranty, Microsoft warrants to you only (the original retail purchaser) that, during the Warranty Period and under normal use and service, the Xbox® Console will substantially conform with the printed user instruction materials packaged with the Console.
So, unless there is some loophole or such, it would be fraud to attempt to send it in for service without paying the fee.

There are individuals that can fix 99% of the bricked units for a substantially smaller fee so you could factor that into your decision.

BTW, I'd wait anyhow, the chances are good there will be a hot deal by the Holidays, if not the die shrink model as well.

Technically it doesn't transfer, but they don't ask for proof of purchase or anything like that when you call them, so I don't think they really care.

Which is why they explictly state it in the warranty terms? You are expected to honor the terms, and if fraud is discovered, MS isn't the company you want throwing lawyers at you. Realistically, yes you might get away with it, but why risk the serious penalties for such a small amount of money as $140 for repairs from MS? Or even less from a 3rd party?

They asked me where I bought mine when I called for service, so unless he lies, or he is fortunate enough to have a "don't ask, don't tell" call, they will charge for the repairs.

Well I bought the 1 year extended warranty from MS and I'm fairly certain in the terms it said that it was transferrable. So just call up, pay $30 and your fine.

The never asked me where I bought it. It was registered under someone esle, but I told them my friend borrowed it and had a problem, so he called support. They registered it under his name.

It helped that it was a true story though.

First off, if the original owner never registered, you're in luck.

Secondly, the 3 year is only for RRoD, so 1 year on rest.

I understand your perspective, now try to understand mine. Discussions concerning any activity that would violate U.S. laws, aren't permitted here, and as a moderator for this site, I'm obligated to enforce that policy. In this case, the reason this hasn't been locked, is it is in that "gray area". As stated, the manufacturer of the product specifically states their warranty policy, so unless someone can point to solid evidence that they (the manufacturer) have extensions or exceptions to that policy, not just anecdotal evidence, my position is to err on the side of caution/legality.

As my own experience with this manufacturer would have involved lying i.e. fraud, in order to receive free service, had I not been the original purchaser, others anecdotal evidence that differs from my own, is "iffy" IMO. The other rationalizations, are just that, rationalizations, and do not reflect any official position by the manufacturer that I'm aware of. Again, if anyone has a link, ect. please provide it.

I hope my sarcasm detector is just in need of adjustment. Because that is the silliest comment I've read in ages.

I might have someone local offering me a 360 Premium with games for $150. Yeah this is a sweet deal but if the failure rate is so high then is it even worth the $150? Would opening it up and doing some sort of cooling mod prevent the RROD?

Even if it does, you likely have $150 in the HDD, Controller(s), HD Cables, Power Supply, and games. Also if it does break you can try calling up support and just do what they say and answer the questions they ask. I've heard of them transferring warranties before.

My friend bought one off ebay, and got it fixed. He didn't even know that he wasn't covered.

Good point. It includes several games that I could possibly sell and get most the money back. Curious does anyone here have a launch system they have thats still going strong?

Got mine at launch, broke during the original 3 month warranty, so got it repaired and that console has been going strong ever since.

I do. Got mine at launch, I'd say I've put a good 1,000 hours on mine.

That thread does clearly reference it as a hypothetical, based on the fictitious situation from a popular film. However, Anandtech's new policies are such, that you are encouraged to post a thread in Personal forums issues when you feel a real issues exists-
Keep topics limited to real issues. This means discussing topics that need moderator attention including illegal or explicit content in threads, or any other inappropriate member behavior.

Don't flame or complain about someone because you don't like them or their opinions.

This forum is designed to help improve our responsiveness to forum issues by dividing up admin issues (technical forum issues) and moderator issues (personal forum issues).

This thread has proved to be constructive and informative, and everyone has stopped offering advice that could be, perhasp, less than legal, and instead provided useful anecdotal feedback for the OP to consider.

$150 is such a good deal on the bundle offered, that even with the $140 repair service factored in (worst case scenario) it is a good deal. Once the console has been serviced, there would then be a 1yr free warranty after that date of service, if I read correctly.

Your best bet should be just simply to call them up and ask. I know several companies that will still cover things under warranty even though you're not the original owner. It really depends on the person you talk to though...it could be the guy working 9-5 Monday won't do it for you but a different person on Saturday would... You might want to call in first and ask if it's registered already, and to whom.

As a side note, I still have a pre-launch 360 (from the Pepsi/Doritos promo) going strong :D It's been used it countless hours of DVD playing, gaming, and it's been left on many a times after forgetting to turn it off. Maybe I'm just lucky :p

It has been suggested by at least 1 member here, that leaving it on so it doesn't experience the cold-hot-cold-hot cycle might helped reduce RRoD issues. So maybe forgetting and leaving it on so often, has been a good thing?

I bought my 360 from a forum member here a few months ago, it was a replacement and he sold it to me. I got the RROD about 2 days later. I called MS, they asked me questions about the original owner, I gave them his name, address and phone number, ther verified it and transferred the warranty to me under my name. They sent me the box-casket and I sen them the 360, got a new looking one a month later and so far so good. Then came the 3 years extension, so I think im good for a bit on the RROD.:)
